Environmental Testing Procedures for Automotive Electronics

Testing Procedures for Automotive Electronics?

Due to the increase in the number of electronic components, reliability testing of sensors has become more important today. Good news is that the adverse effects on the parts can be simulated in a lab and products’ life can be estimated during design phase itself

Ingress Protection
(IP)

Ratings which indicate the resistance of product again dust, liquids and moisture.

Standards
IPX9 & IPX9K
IEC 60529
ISO 20653.

Temperature and humidity Testing
Tests the product for resistance against effects of both temperature and humidity.

Standards
IEC 60068-2-1
ISO 16750-4
IEC 60068-2-64.

Thermal Shock
Tests the products for internal stresses which may cause the products to burst

Standards
IEC 60068-2-14
JESD 22-A104
MIL-STD-
(202, 750, 810, 883).

Corrosion Protection

Cyclic corrosion testing is most popular where product is exposed to cycles of fog, salt, humidity and drying cycles emulating the real road conditions.

Standards
ISO 16151
ASTM B117
SAE J2334.

Vibration Testing

Tests the products for structural rigidity and reliability. Product is subjected to Random, Frequency Sweep, Sweep Sine Vibration profiles to simulate road conditions

Standards
GM 3171
SAE J1211
ISO 16750

Package Testing

Test the packaging products to withstand the damage during transits. Some causes of damage are staking pressure, drop, impact shocks, vibrations and climatic conditions.

Standards
ISTA ( 1,2,3,4,6)
ASTM D999
ASTM D4169,
MIL-STD-810.

Solar/UV ageing

Test the products for effects of climate on the equipment. Machines like Xenon Arc used to test effect of sun and Fluorescent UV testing machines to test effect of UV radiations are used.

Standard
AAMA 624
AATCC TM186
MIL STD 810E
SAE J2020
ISO (29664, 4892 1, 4892 3)
ASTM (C1257,C1442, C1501, C1519, and many more)

Fatigue and Endurance Testing

Tests the products for its reliability to endure its use over long period of time. Two most common forms are load controlled high cycle and strain controlled low cycle fatigue.

Standards
ISO (6892 1&2 527 )
and various ASTM (C1273, C1424, D638, D695, D4762, E9, E8)
