Natural Resources Canada finalizes Amendment 15 to Energy Efficiency Act.

In June, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) published the final revisions to Amendment 15 to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations.

Please take note of the following highlights relating to these regulations:

  • As anticipated, the effective date for all regulatory changes in Amendment 15 is January 1, 2020, which means all appliances manufactured on or after that date must be in compliance.
  • This Amendment creates two categories of appliance, and defines them as follows:
  • decorative gas fireplace means a vented fireplace that is fuelled by natural gas or propane, is marked for decorative use only and is not equipped with a thermostat or intended for use as a heater.
  • heating gas fireplace means a vented fireplace that is fuelled by natural gas or propane and is not a decorative gas fireplace.

The regulation imposes minimum efficiency on heating gas fireplaces, as well as pilot technology restrictions on both categories of appliance, as laid out on the following chart. Please note that at the request of industry, the pilot restriction language has been updated since the last draft.
