The 3 key elements of ATEX certification program

LabTest Certification is an accredited Notified Body (NB No. 2815) for the EU ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) for approval of equipment used in Explosive Atmospheres.

We offer a headache-free process, faster results, and cost-effective solutions for electrical and non-electrical products intended for the EU market. When contacting LabTest for your ATEX projects, you will be talking directly to our HazLoc department, who will be able to assist you with any questions you may have or provide you with a free quotation, if your product is ready to be tested

Once ATEX certified with LabTest, your products will be displayed in the LC Directory of certified products.

In the European marketplace, Ex equipment (HazLoc) is required to comply with the ATEX Directive but may also need to comply with other applicable EU Directives, such as the EMC Directive, Radio Equipment Directive (RED), Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), and others, depending on the product application.

Products complying with the Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) of the ATEX Directive are marked with the “Ex” mark.

What standards does Ex equipment need to comply with in Europe?

Products required to comply with the ATEX Directive are evaluated to the EN 60079 series of standards, which have been adopted from the IEC 60079 series of standards, and/or other harmonized standards published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ).

The ATEX Certification Program consists of 3 key elements, all issued by an accredited Notified Body (NB):

ATEX Test Report (ExTR)

It documents the evaluation and testing of the subject equipment, performed to the applicable EN 60079 series of standards and/or other harmonized standards;

ATEX Quality Assurance Notification (QAN)

It documents the suitability of the manufacturer’s implementation of the requirements of EN ISO/IEC 80079-34. This audit is performed by a LabTest qualified auditor at the manufacturer location. Length and frequency of both initial and Surveillance (Follow-Up) audits vary depending on the existence of a quality management system based on ISO 9001:2015 (certified by a third party) or not.

ATEX EU Type Examination Certificate

Issued by an accredited ATEX Notified Body to a manufacturer once both the ExTR and QAN are successfully completed.

UNIT VERIFICATION PROGRAM

For Ex equipment produced in limited/small quantities, the Unit Verification program offers a better option than certification. The two programs are very similar, with the main difference being that for Unit Verification, the labels are applied to the product by the Notified Body representative and therefore, QAN audit is not required.
