UKCA Marking for Ex Equipment
What You Need to Know
UKCA (U.K. Conformity Assessment) marking is the U.K. product marking requirement that, moving forward, will be needed for all Ex products being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), moving forward, and which will be substituting the previous CE Marking, as per EU requirements (CE marking will continue to be accepted in Northern Ireland).
The UKCA marking came into effect on January 1, 2021, with a transitional period that will last until January 1, 2023. To view the full U.K. Regulation click here: UKSI 696:2019 – Schedule 25
LabTest Certification
UKCA Approved Body
LabTest Certification has already engaged with Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and UKAS, and in the process of obtaining Accreditation to become a UKCA Ex Approved Body for Ex equipment approval.
Once officially an Approved Body for Ex products, LabTest Certification will be one of the very few accredited organizations able to issue a complete package for UKCA, UK(NI – Northern Ireland), ATEX, IECEx, and North American certification, all under one roof. This is made possible thanks to Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) in place between Canada, the European Union, and the U.K., and also due to LabTest Certification being a recognized member of the IECEx Scheme and an accredited Certification Body for the Canadian and U.S. markets.
Overview of key points
UKCA mark will not be recognized in EU, EEA or Northern Ireland
For Northern Ireland, either the CE mark or dual UK(NI) CE mark will be required
A U.K. Responsible Person will be required if the manufacturer is located outside the U.K.
UKCA to replace ATEX for the U.K. market
Starting January 1, 2023, only UKCA Issued ‘EX’ Certificates will be accepted in the U.K., for products that previously required an ATEX Notified Body Certification.
“Ex” Certificates of Conformity will have to be issued by a U.K. Approved Body or an Approved Body under the Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement (Canada-UK TCA), such as LabTest Certification, for entry into the U.K. market using the designated U.K. List of Approved Standard.
To allow manufacturers time for adjustment to the new requirements, CE marked products will still be accepted until December 31, 2022, if any of the following scenarios apply:
